Message from the President

Fellow Lions,

Are we really this community.s "Best Kept Secret"? I tend to

agree with that notion or thought. It seems to me that we are

known in the Licking Valley area, but in name only. If I were to

stop someone at the L.il Bear store in Hanover and ask him/her to

name one service project the Licking Valley Lions do; what do you

think the response would be? I.m afraid that they would just shrug

their shoulders and say "I don.t know". Now if I were smart, I.d

ask that question while standing directly in front of our Lions bulletin

board and hope that they would take a hint. We do have several

visuals in the community; a website, the above mentioned

bulletin board, signs at village entrances, eyeglass collection

boxes, newspaper articles, team sponsorships, parades, etc.

But….what do we really do? WE SERVE! That.s the message

that needs to be heard. Be proud to be a Lion and take the opportunity

to spread the news to your family, friends, neighbors and

coworkers. See you all at the Sweetheart Dinner & Auction on

February 20th.

Lion President Ron

LAST MONTH'S RECAP:

Our guest speaker at

the January 14 dinner

meeting was Kaylee Strohacker

from the 4-H Club.

She heard about the Pilot

Dog program and decided

to sign up. She and her

family received a standard poodle from the Pilot Dog

Association and named it Coco. They raised and

trained it, and took it to visit nursing homes. Coco won

first place at the Ohio State Fair. Then, during the Hartford

Fair, Kaylee had to turn him back in to PDA. It was

such a great experience for the whole family that they

plan to do it again. Kaylee even made a decision to become

a nurse after her nursing home visits.

We welcome Erin Fee, daughter of our President,

Ron McLeish, as a new member. She has already volunteered

to help with our auction in February. She is a

wonderful new asset to the club.

It is time already to start the next Partner-in-Sight

raffle campaign. We will have tickets available at the

District 13-K Convention on March 6-7. Lion Del will

coordinate the sales teams like he did last year.

Lion Memories

At our January 14th dinner meeting, PDG Don DeVault

shared some of his favorite memories of our club. In

January 1992, he came as a speaker for Camp Echoing

Hills. By March, he, Irma and their son, Rick, became

members. Lion Don.s mentors were Lions Walt Brookover

and Homer Bosold. He went up the ranks from two

year director to club President. He has served as Zone

Chair and for three years as District Youth Chair. He ran

for Deputy District Governor in 2001 in a field of three

contestants and lost to PDG Ed Otte. Two years later,

he ran again and won, becoming Vice District Governor

in 2004-5 and District Governor in 2005-6. One of the

highlights of his term was the opportunity to be sworn

into office in Hong Kong.

President Ron is l seeking members to take a minute to share their

favorite memories about our club; something humorous or inspirational.

Join in the fun by contacting President Ron to get scheduled.

LEO CORNER

Our Leo Club rang the bell for the Salvation

Army three times during the

holidays. They are currently preparing

a Monopoly Board to sell at the District

13-K Convention. They are also still

recycling plastic bottles at the school.

Kudos…

To Lion Jim Hunt who received a Certificate

of Appreciation for helping the

Heath Lions Club with their poker

booth at the Millersport Sweet Corn

Festival in 2009.

Thoughts and Prayers

Lion Irma DeVault and former

District 13-K First Lady has

been experiencing dizziness

and tiredness, caused by atrial

fibrillation. She will receive a

pacemaker on February 9 at

Mt. Carmel East Hospital,

which will regulate her heart

rhythm.

Lion Walt Brookover fell and

broke his left wrist. He had

broken his right wrist in 2008.

He says he is doing well.

Lion Mike Bishop has just lost

his mother, Hazel Beatrice

Bishop, who died on January

25 at Chapel Grove Inn at the

age of 81. Services were held

on January 29, with burial of

her ashes at Smith Chapel

Cemetery at a later date. She

was also the aunt of Lion Rodney

Lothes.

Lion Barb Tolle fell twice in

January and is having pain

from "Golfer.s Elbow."
